Common Wood Characteristics

Red Oak

Shall be free of knots, kiln check, end cracks and wane. Specified lengths may be up to 2“ short to remove any end cracks.

SAP Soft Maple

Shall be free of knots, kiln check, end cracks and wane. The board’s “good” surface may consist of no more than 10% heartwood. Specified lengths may be up to 2” short to remove any end cracks.

Standard Cherry

Shall be free of knots, kiln check, end cracks and wane. These boards will be shipped as 70/30 or better, meaning the board’s “good” surface may consist of up to 30% sapwood and the opposing surface may contain up to 70% sapwood. Gum is not considered a defect.

Premium Cherry

Shall be free of knots, kiln check, end cracks and wane. The boards will be shipped as 95/80, meaning the “good” surface will be 95% heartwood and the opposing surface may have up to 20% sapwood. Gum is not considered a defect.

Standard Black Walnut

Shall be free of kiln check, end cracks and wane. These boards will be shipped as 70/30, meaning the “good” surface of the board may consist of up to 30% sapwood and the opposing surface may consist of up to 70% sapwood. Solid knots 3/8” or less will not be considered as defects.

Premium Black Walnut

Shall be free of kiln check, end cracks and wane. These boards will be shipped as 95/80, meaning the “good” surface will be 95% heartwood and the opposing surface may consist of up to 20% sapwood. Solid knots 3/8” or smaller will not be considered defects. Specified lengths may be up to 2” short to remove any end cracks.

Hickory

Shall be free of kiln check, end cracks and wane. All hickory boards may consist of deep contrasts of heartwood and sapwood, solid knots ¼” or less will not be considered defects. Specified lengths may be up to 2” short to remove any end cracks.

Paint Grade Poplar

Shall be free of kiln check, end cracks and wane. Boards will consist of deep contrast of heartwood and sapwood. Any size knot may be filled with Bondo as long as it does not affect the integrity of the board. Specified lengths may be up to 2” short to remove any end cracks.

Stain Grade Poplar

Shall be free of knots, kiln check, end cracks and wane. Board’s “good” face will be sapwood, and may consist of up to 100% light green shades of heartwood. No Bondo may be used to fill knots. Suitable for medium to dark colored stains.

Select White Poplar

Shall be free of knots, kiln check, end cracks and wane. Board’s “good” face will be sapwood and may consist of up to 15% light green heartwood. Specified lengths may be up to 2” short to remove any end cracks. Suitable for light colored stains.

Radiata Pine

Shall be free of kiln check, end cracks, knots, wane, and pitch. Sound knots ½” in diameter or smaller will not be considered defects. Specified lengths may be up to 2” short to remove any end cracks.

Knotty Alder

Shall be free of kiln check and wane. These boards will be used to achieve a rustic look. Boards may have knots/splits that pass through the entire thickness of the board.

Superior Alder

Shall be free of kiln check and wane. Two or less sound knots ½” or smaller in diameter will be permitted in 8’ length and longer.

Natural Birch

Shall be free of kiln check, knots, end cracks and wane. All Natural Birch boards may consist of deep contrasts of heartwood and sapwood. Specified lengths may be up to 2”short to remove any end cracks.

SAP Birch

Shall be free of kiln check, knots, end cracks and wane. The “good” face of the SAP Birch boards shall consist of no more that 10% heartwood. Specified lengths may be up to 2” short to remove any end cracks.

White Hard Maple

Shall be free of knots, kiln check, end cracks and wane. The “good” face may consist of no more than 10% heartwood, mineral will not be treated as a defect. Specified lengths may be up to 2” short to remove any end cracks.
